EAA 2025 Workshop Records

These resources capture the core outputs of the Fear and Joy workshop held at the European Association of Archaeologists conference in 2025.

They include the practitioner‑generated themes and solution maps developed during the session, alongside the official abstract for the workshop.

Together, they provide a clear record of the discussions, challenges, and ideas shared by participants, and form part of the wider development of the Fear and Joy Solutions Kit.

Below you can view or download the four visual records from the session, along with the workshop abstract for reference.

Fear Themes Matrix — Summary

This matrix brings together all practitioner‑identified fears shared during the EAA2025 workshop. The themes span identity, professional structures, workplace culture, recognition, perceptions, and the wider fear culture within archaeology. It captures more than forty individual concerns, ranging from feeling boxed in or undervalued to fears about relevance, hierarchy, exclusion, and the pressures of conformity. This dataset represents the full breadth of challenges voiced by participants.

Fear Solutions Map — Summary

This visual map summarises the solutions proposed by participants to address fear, discomfort, and professional challenges. The solutions are grouped under seven areas including awareness, community support, ethics, advocacy, professional practice change, research, culture, and wellbeing. It reflects the collective ideas generated during the workshop for building safer, more supportive, and more equitable professional environments.

Joy Themes Matrix — Summary

This matrix records the many sources of joy and nourishment identified by practitioners during the EAA2025 session. Themes include publication, teaching, personal fulfilment, community connection, learning, collaboration, and outreach. It captures a wide range of positive experiences — from discovery and creativity to belonging, curiosity, and shared professional identity — illustrating what sustains and inspires archaeologists.

Joy Solutions Map — Summary

This map presents the solutions suggested by participants for strengthening joy within archaeological practice. The ideas are grouped under collaboration, diversity of thought, and culture and communication. They highlight ways to encourage supportive dialogue, intellectual openness, cross‑disciplinary collaboration, and the sharing of joy as a legitimate and valuable part of professional life.
